The Fall of Samsung: A Deep Dive into Its Declining Appeal

By Aaron Dantas | April 2025

For years on end now, Samsung has been the titan of the Android smartphone world. But recently, a shift in sentiment is becoming slowly noticeable. Despite maintaining its top-tier brand image, Samsung is being criticized for losing touch with user expectationsFrom the green line display issues, motherboard failures, to a declining market share in India and the US, things aren’t looking quite as smooth as they seem on the surface. In this blog, we'll be diving deep into the latest reports, One UI 7 update issues, Is AI alone enough to save Samsung’s smartphone dominance? Read to find out as I break down the concerns and explore what’s causing discord between Samsung and its once-loyal fan base.

1️⃣ Overpriced phones with Underwhelming Specs

One of the most striking concerns centers around value for money. Samsung’s mid-range phones, especially the Galaxy A and M series, are often priced higher than competitors like Xiaomi, iQOO, and Motorola — despite offering less RAM, lower refresh rates, or weaker processors. But consumers are smarter now. They cross-compare before purchasing, and when a similarly priced phone from a rival brand like Xiaomi or Oppo/Vivo offers a better display, faster charging, and a stronger chipset, the decision becomes obvious for them, leading to a striking 29% decline in overall market share and annual growth

Hardware Scandals

2️⃣The Green Line Scandal: A Major Trust Breaker

One of the most alarming issues plaguing Samsung phones — especially older Galaxy S20 and S21 series — is the green line defect. Out of nowhere, after a random software update, users report a bright vertical green line on the AMOLED display. This isn’t caused by drops or water damage — it’s a display failure rooted in internal hardware flaws that is triggered by the software update

What’s worse is that users are expected to pay ₹15,000–₹20,000 out of their pockets for a screen replacement, even when the fault isn't theirs. Despite growing complaints, Samsung has not yet rolled out a consistent free-repair policy across regions, further tarnishing its reputation..

3️⃣ Motherboard Failures: A Silent Chaotic Disaster

Several mid-range Samsung phones such as the A series and M series have experienced motherboard crashes after software updates, rendering phones unusable and stuck in a restart loop. These sudden deaths leave users hanging with no solution except a costly motherboard replacement, if the phone is out of the warranty period.

Despite recurring reports, Samsung has stayed silent on the issue. Without official acknowledgement or support programs, many users are forced to abandon their devices prematurely and jump ship to another brand due to this misfortunate incident, probably never buying or recommending another device of the brand again

4️⃣One UI Gone Wrong: Ads, Bloatware & Unfair Updates

While One UI does offer a polished experience, it’s getting bloated. Users now deal with:

  • Unremovable bloatware

  • Push ads in stock apps like Weather or Galaxy Store

  • Inconsistent software support

And here’s something interesting; some new mid-range phones are launching with One UI 7 based on Android 14 out of the box, while flagship users with older models like the Galaxy S21 or even S22 are still waiting for the same update — or worse, being told they won’t get it at all.

This inconsistency has angered loyal customers who were waiting eagerly for their turn at using the latest android version and expected flagship phones to be treated with priority.

5️⃣Exynos vs Snapdragon: A Losing Battle

Samsung continues to push Exynos chipsets in India while reserving Snapdragon for Western markets such as the US. But Exynos phones often heat up faster, lag during gaming, and drain battery quicker. Which leads to Indian users feeling cheated — since they're paying essentially the same amount for the phone but getting lesser performance

6️⃣AI Features Are Just... Meh?

.

Samsung introduced some new Galaxy AI features like:

  • Circle to Search

  • Live Translate

  • AI Summarizer & Chat/Note Assist

But it is a popular opinion that these features are either gimmicky or already offered by Google’s ecosystem in Android. Moreover, most of them are exclusive to Galaxy S24 Ultra and other high-end models, sidelining the vast midrange user base again.

I mean c'mon, AI is supposed to change and adapt with technology, right? not gatekeep it only for ₹1 lakh phones.

🔚 Final Thoughts: Samsung Needs to Listen Again!

Samsung’s current issues aren’t about just one product — they reflect a deeper, broader disconnect with its user base. Between poor update policies, hardware flaws, and bloatware in the software experience, users are losing trust in their once very loved brand.

The brand that once stood for innovation and reliability must now rethink its strategy, especially in price-sensitive markets like India, or risk being overtaken by swifter and sharp-shooted competitors.
